Bike Fit With Dr. Brendan Connor

The main goal of bike fitting here at WIMB is to help keep you happy and comfortable while reaching your cycling goals. The project seeks to integrate modern science and biomechanics, highlighting the adaptable nature of our human bodies into personalized solutions to reach your riding goals.

Over the last 20 years in the medical community, we have seen that biomechanics and "alignment" may be less important than we used to believe. This has led to an increasing emphasis on the adaptability of the human body. We have an asymmetric human body interacting with a symmetric machine for thousands of repetitions on any given bike ride. Forces not well distributed or tolerated will result in pain and discomfort. We can solve these problems through adjustments to the bike but increasingly we should look towards increasing the capacity of the body to tolerate these loads.

What to Expect

  • A full physical therapy evaluation to learn about how you move: limitations and strengths

  • Supporting modifications made to the bike based on your mobility, strength, and movements patterns

  • A rehabilitative, injury prevention, or strength/mobility/motor control program to help make you more robust on the bike for the kind of riding you do.

FAQ:

  • Q: Is this different from other bike fitting services?

A: Yes. Many local bike fitters do an excellent job, but sometimes you may have a medical issue causing bike issues. We'll still be assessing you on the bike and combining that with our PT evaluation. As a physical therapist I have tools and education to address issues beyond the bike and synthesize that with adjustments to the bike itself.

  •  Q: What should I bring?

A: Your bike, shoes, and clothing that you'd normally ride in. If you happen to have spare stems of different sizes, or different saddles, those might be helpful items to bring as well.

  • Q: Should I come while I have an injury?

A: Yes! This is the perfect time to come in. We can make modifications to your position to keep you in the saddle, and in combination with a rehab program and healing, gradually transition back to your normal position.

  • Q: What does this cost?

    A: There are a 2 different options:

    1. You can use your health insurance: If you choose to utilize your health insurance, the first visit is a 60 minute full PT evaluation without the bike. This allows us to evaluate your strength, flexibility, and control, and get a strong idea of factors that may influence your issues on the bike. The second visit is the 60 minute bike fit, synthesizing what was learned about how you move and optimizing your bike accordingly. Further visits are always an option if medically necessary. Each visit will cost whatever a typical physical therapy visit may cost to you based on your insurance benefit. (NOTE: Only 1 visit can be scheduled per day)

    2. You can pay cash (without using health insurance): This will be a 2 hour appointment for a Performance & Medical Based Bike Fit - $295. This includes the full in depth movement & body assessment combined with on the bike adjustments.
